Weekly Word of Faith 07: Overcoming Opposition

This week’s scripture: Nehemiah 4:1-3“When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, ‘What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?’ Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, ‘What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!’”

Opposition is an inevitable part of fulfilling God’s purpose. When we step out in faith to accomplish what God has called us to do, we often encounter criticism, discouragement, and obstacles. Nehemiah 4:1-3 shows us how opposition can come in the form of mockery and doubt, but it also reveals the power of steadfastness and reliance on God in the face of such challenges.

Recognizing Opposition

Opposition is often a sign that we are moving in the right direction spiritually. For Nehemiah and the Jews, rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem was not only a practical necessity but also a deeply spiritual act of restoration and obedience to God. Yet, as they sought to carry out God’s mission, opposition arose from those who sought to hinder their progress.

Sanballat and Tobiah represent the types of challenges we may face when pursuing God’s will:

Mockery: Sanballat ridiculed the Jews, calling them weak and questioning their ability to complete the wall. Mockery aims to undermine our confidence and make us second-guess our calling.

Doubt: Tobiah tried to belittle their efforts by suggesting the wall was so fragile it would crumble at the slightest disturbance. Doubt is a weapon the enemy often uses to erode our faith.

Opposition may also come in the form of unexpected hardships, inner fears, or even resistance from people we thought would support us. Recognizing opposition for what it is—a challenge to our faith—helps us respond with wisdom and trust in God.

Overcoming Opposition Through God

Nehemiah’s response to opposition is a powerful example for us today. Rather than succumbing to discouragement or reacting out of frustration, Nehemiah turned to God and stayed steadfast in his mission.

1.Stay Focused on the Mission:

Despite the ridicule, Nehemiah remained committed to rebuilding the wall. He understood that the task was not about pleasing others but about fulfilling God’s plan. In moments of opposition, we must fix our eyes on the purpose God has given us, trusting that His work will prevail.

2.Turn to Prayer:

Nehemiah’s first instinct was to pray. He did not take matters into his own hands but sought God’s intervention and protection. Prayer is our first line of defense against opposition, as it centers our hearts on God and reminds us of His sovereignty.

3.Equip Yourself for the Battle:

As the opposition increased, Nehemiah prepared the people for both work and defence (Nehemiah 4:17-18). In our spiritual walk, we must equip ourselves with the Word of God and the armor of faith (Ephesians 6:10-18) to withstand opposition and remain strong in the Lord.

4.Rely on God’s Strength:

Opposition can feel overwhelming, but we are not called to rely on our own strength. Psalm 127:1 reminds us that unless the Lord builds the house, our labor is in vain. Trust in God’s power to sustain you through challenges.

5.Build Together in Community:

Nehemiah worked with others, creating a united front against opposition. Surround yourself with fellow believers who will encourage, support, and pray for you as you face challenges.

Biblical Examples of Overcoming Opposition

David and Goliath: David faced ridicule from his brothers and scorn from Goliath, but his trust in God brought victory (1 Samuel 17).

Elijah on Mount Carmel: Despite being outnumbered by the prophets of Baal, Elijah stood firm in his faith, and God demonstrated His power (1 Kings 18:20-39).

Jesus Christ: Throughout His ministry, Jesus faced constant opposition from religious leaders and even His own followers. Yet, He remained resolute, fulfilling His mission to save humanity.

Practical Steps for Overcoming Opposition

1.Surrender to God: Acknowledge that opposition is part of the journey and surrender your struggles to Him. Let His peace guard your heart and mind.

2.Meditate on Scripture: Fill your heart with God’s promises. Verses like Isaiah 41:10 (“Do not fear, for I am with you”) and Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ”) are reminders of His faithfulness.

3.Persevere in the Work: Refuse to let fear or discouragement stop you. Like Nehemiah, keep building, trusting that God will complete what He has started in you (Philippians 1:6).

4.Encourage Others: Share your journey of faith and perseverance with others. Your testimony can strengthen and inspire those facing their own battles.

Reflection

What opposition are you currently facing in your life? Are there voices of doubt or ridicule that threaten to discourage you? Take time this week to bring these challenges before God in prayer. Trust that He will equip you with the strength, wisdom, and courage needed to overcome.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our strength and refuge in times of opposition. When we face discouragement and resistance, help us to stay focused on Your purpose and to rely on Your power. Teach us to respond with faith, prayer, and perseverance, knowing that You are always with us. May our lives testify to Your goodness and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
