In a compelling gathering in November of last year, leaders and advocated from diverse organisations converged at the Black & Asian Mental Wellbeing Conference 2023. This significant event delved into the intricate landscape of mental health, with a spotlight on the well-being of young people and children. The Mental Well-being Conference showcased a tapestry of insights from speakers representing various organisations committed to advancing the discussion on mental health. From renowned psychotherapists to community activists, to business leaders with a passion for change regarding the sometimes-taboo topic of mental wellbeing, each speaker brought a unique perspective, enriching the discourse, and reinforcing the shared commitment to mental wellness.

  • Executive Clinical Director of ‘Living Well Consortium’- 1 of 2 primary mental health NHS talking therapy organisations in Birmingham and Solihull.

2. Ambrose Koryang- “Children’s Mental Wellbeing”

  • Accredited Psychological Psychotherapist.
  • Founder of ‘Ask Identity’ and the ‘Community Interest Company (CIC)- a social enterprise aimed at reaching and supporting those in need of prompt psychological support.
  • emphasized the role of empathy, effective communication, support , and community engagement in building positive mental health in young minds.

3. Daniel Bowen-Smith- “Kids Sport For Good Health”

  • Co-founder of ‘Sports For Kids’- a family-run business that provides impactful initiatives like breakfast clubs, as well as bespoke sports and mentoring sessions for young people of all ages.
  • Works with professional football clubs and non-profit organisations,  to motivate young people, get them to understand their purpose, and accept that ‘Anything Is Possible!’
  • Shared his vision for shaping young futures, and creating a platform for mentorship, teamwork, and personal growth among youths.

4. Reverend Olivia Amartey- “Spirituality And Well-Being”

  • Executive Director for ‘Elim Pentecostal Church’ in the UK and Northern Ireland
  • Has a passion for creatively sharing God’s Word, and finding innovative ways to impact her local community through social action projects.
  • Delved into the interaction of spirituality and wellbeing, offering insights towards having a more balanced and spiritually-enriched life.
  • Shared the transformative power of spiritual practices in fostering peace, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

5. Elsie Gayle- “Lived Experience Professionally And As A Carer” 

  • Registered nurse, midwife and founder of ‘Mimosa Midwives.’
  • A member of the United Nations.
  • Advocates for Black women in healthcare.
  • Illustrated the profound impact midwifery has on the journey of bringing new life into the world.

6. Larry Guscoth- “Stress Management”

  • Retired Chartered Physiotherapist with over 35 years of experience in the NHS
  • Special interest in manual handling, pain, and stress management
  • Shared invaluable insights and practical tips on stress management, through principles of physical well-being and mental resilience.

1. Ambrose Koryang: Men and Well-being- “Keeping It Real”

  • Opened a dialogue on mental health, vulnerability, and practical strategies for maintaining emotional wellbeing.
  • Highlighted tools to maintain balance and life connections, by incorporating mindful practices and stress management.

2. Pastor Pauline Young: Women and Well-being- “Reaching For Your Own Oxygen Mask Before Helping Others”

  • Certified Life Coach.
  • Founder of A.N.I.T.A Mindset Coaching.
  • Guided women on practicing self-care, emphasizing that caring for oneself is not selfish, but essential for wellbeing.

Collaborative Solutions

One of the defining aspects of the Mental Well-being Conference was the collaborative spirit among leaders, organisations, and professionals.
